Why I love Skateboarding

by J.W.

What I really love most about skateboarding, is that I get to do it here, in New York City, where even when it rains… my board is always with me, just in case. The city streets dry fast.

Skateboarding is a time machine:

To relive old favorite things
Be utterly in the moment
To pursue something epically cool…

I appreciate the time it has given me.

Real – time – not just super great fantastic exhilarating time. Time in solitude. Time with friends. Time to get there, to do as much as I can, go as fast as I can, or take the route I want to take. It is human powered transportation, a vehicle of freedom with no restrictions. Except maybe by “the authority”, if they catch me.

No tickets required. Just a skateboard.

You throw it down, pick it up, ride the bus, cut through parks, and hop back on again with (relative) ease. No buckles or straps. No cumbersome mechanical thing that restricts where you can go or how you will get there.

I have faced fears and conquered them.

I have fears. But it’s not over yet. I will get better than this. Despite aches and pains, I am both mentally and physically fitter because of it.
There is no drug or fix to fulfill the rush of it. There is nothing thing like it. It is a reason to wake up, something to think about and analyze and fantasize about. It is a constant creative process and sometimes it is the pursuit of finding nothing in particular. A healthy obsession.
