CRUMBS: Skateboard Cupcakes!!!

A tasty treat that helps a great cause!!!

If you were looking for a great birthday surprise for the skater in your life – you’ve found the tastiest treat with a twist.

CRUMBS Bake Shop, Originators of the Gourmet Cupcake, Partners with the Tony Hawk Foundation to Create the “Tony Hawk SkateCake”

My favorite bakery, CRUMBS, just took cupcakes to a whole new level of rad. The Tony Hawk foundation is a really fantastic organization that helps build safe skateparks for communities that need them, but can’t afford them.

Created by Tony Hawk himself, the SkateCake is made up of chocolate cake with rainbow sprinkles baked in, vanilla cream cheese frosting edged with red and white sprinkles and topped with an edible sugar replica of a Tony Hawk custom designed skateboard. CRUMBS will donate $ 1.00 from every SkateCake sold to The Tony Hawk Foundation. The SkateCake will be available for $4.00 each in all store locations and will also be sold online at www.crumbs.com.

NEW YORK, NY (March 4, 2010) – CRUMBS Bake Shop, the originator of the gourmet cupcake, is collaborating with the Tony Hawk Foundation, to create a signature cupcake, the "Tony Hawk SkateCake.” Proceeds from the sale of the SkateCake will benefit The Tony Hawk Foundation to help provide funds to build high-quality skateparks in low-income areas throughout the United States.

“This is the first time CRUMBS has partnered with a sports foundation like the Tony Hawk Foundation,” said Jason Bauer, CEO and co-founder of CRUMBS Bake Shop. “We’re thrilled to be part of this unique partnership to help foster lasting improvements in local communities, and give back to our youth in a fun and relatable way.”

As of February 19, 2010, the Tony Hawk SkateCake is available in all stores and online (shipping nation-wide) in our signature size through the end of the year. The SkateCake is a delicious combination of chocolate cake with sprinkles baked into the cake, vanilla cream cheese frosting, red and white sprinkles around the edges and topped with an edible “skateboard,” that was designed by Tony Hawk himself for the SkateCake.

Skateboarding in Gym

Check out: Why Skateboarding Should be Taught in School

NEW YORK (WABC) — A New York City high school is now offering a skateboarding class for credit, one of a wide range of quirky physical education electives available to students.
The skateboarding elective is offered as a gym class to 9th and 10th graders at East Side Community High School. It began in February as an after school program but has since morphed into a for-credit pursuit.
The district also offers yoga classes at some schools as well as the Brazilian martial art capoeira at Lehman High School in the Bronx.
One Department of Education official says there has been a shift from the usual fare of basketball or volleyball to “an overall culture of fitness.”
High school students are required to complete at least seven semesters of physical education.

The Brooklyn Banks Update

Map of the Staging Plan

Save the Brooklyn Banks

Brooklyn Banks 1

Saving the Brooklyn Banks
“Brooklyn Banks 1″ shows the area that will be closed for the 4 years after they paint the overpasses. Everything to the left of the red line will be behind a temporary wall(the line goes all the way to Rose street- that is the closed road between the big banks and the small banks) This will pretty much make the actual “banks” unrideable because as we all know it is very difficult to ride them from such an extreme angle.

Brooklyn Banks 2

Shows that the upper banks area will be pretty much rideable up until the end of the steel flatbar.
Save the Brooklyn Banks

Timeline of approx dates:

Jan 15th (Approx 4-6 months) – both overpasses that go over the banks area will be covered and
painted. Virtually the entire banks area from Pearl to Rose streets will be closed and off limits.

Once overpasses are painted(approx summer 2010)- the north ramp (ramp furthest away from the bridge itself) will be uncovered and the area that is not used for staging will be open

2014- entire banks area will be open again.

This is the official statement from DOT:

The Brooklyn Bridge is in urgent need of rehabilitation, and this project is slated to begin in 2010 and expected to finish in 2014. During this time, a portion of the Brooklyn Banks will be closed for use by the contractor. When the storage area is established, more than half of the area currently used as a skatepark will be available for public use.

The scope of work for this project also includes painting, which is expected to begin in the winter of 2010. During painting work, the park will be closed to provide the space required for painting operations. After the painting work in this area is complete, anticipated for mid 2010, the park will be reopened with the exception of the storage area. The park will completely reopen when the rehabilitation is completed. DOT has been working closely with Steve Rodriguez, spokesperson for the Brooklyn Banks and the communities that use it, to share this space without compromising the vital reconstruction of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Press Secretary
NYC Department of Transportation
New York City, New York

Dear Seth Solomonow:

I am a resident of New York City, and I am writing to express my concern about the long term closing of the park known as Brooklyn Banks. It is my understanding that the park will be used to a staging ground for heavy machinery during the much-needed rehabilitation of the Brooklyn Bridge. Doing this will destroy the brick surface that makes this place unique. Furthermore, if even some small part of the space can be left opened, then I am asking the Department of Transportation to allow us to continue using the park. I understand the need to ensure human life is protected. However, as citizens of this New York City, we deserve the opportunity to be involved in the process, to ensure that opportunities to preserve history, are considered. Please give us the consideration we deserve.

The space has been enjoyed by a committed community of enthusiasts for nearly thirty years now. It has been destroyed before, but was restored thanks to the efforts of leaders in the extreme sports community, in conjunction with New York City officials. You may not know this, but almost every other historical place has been taken away from us and never given back. For that reason, the Brooklyn Banks a landmark. It is an endangered icon that represents the cultural and economic influence of New York City’s urban youth. In the last 30 years, this park has attracted locals and tourists, filmers and photographers, skateboarders, bmxers, inliners, and so many more.

All we are asking for is consideration. There must be some way to compromise. Please allow our community to be a part of the process.

Sincerely,

How To

Skateboard for Christmas

How to buy a kid their first skateboard.

You thought this was going to be easy, well… It’s not.

It’s Christmas and Chanukah, you want to buy your kids a good skateboard but don’t want to spend more then you have to. If this is their first board, you probably want to get them something safe to try out, to see if they even like it, right? If this is not their first board, either find out what the want exactly or buy them something else!!!

Beginners don’t know what they need yet.

Beginners have grand images of what they think skateboarding means, based on the influences in their life. But the reality is, they don’t know what kind of skateboarder they are, until they are doing it.

Buying a beginner board in one sentence:

The best board I can recommend for beginners is a board that gives them the most stability (7.5 size) when learning to ride, is easy to turn (soft truck bushings) and cruises over cracks and rough asphalt (bigger soft wheels). Remember that last sentence when you go to a skate shop and you might be ok with just that. If you are in New York City, Blades is a good place to buy a beginner board. They are very sensitive the beginner state of mind, dig?

If money isn’t a big issue here, then you should go to a skateshop with your child and ask lots of questions. But you will still want to do some research.

Do not buy a Tony Hawk skateboard at Toys R Us or Modells!!!!!

Please. For the sake of your kids well being, take a little time and learn about skateboards.

Tony Hawk skateboards are dangerous.Toy boards are not skateboards, they are garbage and they are dangerous. Buy a blank CCS for $69.99 or any other brand name complete before these. Then you’ll have only been half screwed.

It’s a shame that Tony Hawk puts his name on said garbage, but he does. Do not buy his boards! Your kids will be laughed out of every skatepark and spot and will likely give up all together. (Yes. I said it. For all that Mr. Hawk has done for skateboarding, he has committed an act of betrayal with the boards he has allowed to be put on the market under his name. Shame on you Tony. I love you. But shame shame shame on you.)

Yes, when you were a kid skateboards were completely different, but technology has come a long way. And it is worth your time to ask questions, research and buy the right equipment.

About CCS and Brand Name "Complete" Setups

The reason they sell popular brand names, like Real, Blind and Almost as completes for as low as $69.99, is because they get stingy on the important parts like bearings and trucks. Companies are banking on your lack of knowledge and providing you with a cheap – sell out – solution. The irony here is that the part that you can be really stingy on, without losing a lot of the quality, is the DECK!!!!!!! BUT you are still far better off with any one of these then a board from Toy Board.

There is little mystery in the deck.

Sure, each deck has a unique shape and the quality of the wood can impact how much "pop" you get. But the reality is, the deck is free advertising that you pay allot of money for. Once a rider has some experience, they may find that they like the concaved shape of Alien better then the flatness of a Baker board, or vice versa. Or maybe they support a team or local business. There are plenty of options out there for beginner boards.

<- You can build a fairly decent (and I stress the low tone in which I say decent) complete set up at CCS for $64.99 here: http://shop.ccs.com/product/model:110525/sku:61-15845/CCS%20Black%20Complete?supercat=home&cm=skate#sku=61-15845&size=7.5

I HATE CCS TRUCKS AND BEARINGS – CCS has carries alot of brands, so you can build your own board fairly easily and substitute cheaper parts here and there. A few orders I’ve placed though, came with mismatched trucks, so.. you know.. like everything.. it can be a crap shoot.

A good idea to buy from a skate shop,

But sometimes they take you for a ride.

So read up a bit. Here are two articles by my favorite skateboarding advice giver Steve Cave, Buying the right Skateboard and FAQ Cheap Boards. You should know the difference between trusted trucks and bearings and unknown brands. I have heard war stories about Dads spending $120 on a setup with unknown parts and they might as well have gone to Toys are Us and paid $40 for Mr. Hawks garbage.

What is the cheapest board I can buy, that is not a toy board?

Build it yourself.

It sounds scary, but if you do research, you can go shopping for parts and build it yourself.

Here is your basic list:

  • Deck + Grip
    • Blank Deck (ebay) -$9.99
    • CCS Brand – $24.99 – $34.99
    • Brand Name – $49.99
  • Trucks
    • Most Brand Name – $39.99 – $45.99
    • CCS Brand (not recommended) – $19.99 – $29.99
  • Wheels
    • Blanks – $9.99
    • CCS Brand – $12.99 – $15.99
    • Brand Name – $29.99 – $39.99
    • Soft Wheels- $32.95
  • Bearings
    • Bones Reds (recommended) – $15.99
  • Hardware
    • Brand Name – $3.99

If you total up the above, at the cheapest, your board would cost $79.99. Doesn’t seem like much of a bargin… eh? Makes you want to go puchase that Tony Hawk board. DON’T. There are still better options.

Share the effort.

You don’t want to pay full full price at a shop, but you want a good ride and you’d like to have it put together. You can still go to your local skate shop if you buy a deck (and wheels) online. What you can do is buy some parts online and some parts in the shop. Will shops be pleased with me for saying that? Probably not. But they will be more than happy to sell you trucks and bearings.

Yes, gratuity is always accepted and appreciated.

Do you tip the guys in a skate shop? Yes. There is nothing wrong with tipping a guy or girl for helping your out.

Cheap bearings are a crime.

Spin the wheels of a new skateboard and it should continue spinning for at least 20 rotations.

Bearings make wheels spin. The faster they spin, the safer the ride. I know, It seems crazy, but it’s true. When wheels are jerky, it makes it harder to ride. Simple as that. (If they don’t spin well, first try loosening the wheel nuts a little. The wheels need some space on the axle to spin fast.)

A quickie upgrade.

If you do buy a cheap complete, the best thing you can do is drag it over to a skate shop and replace the bearings for $15. You may not save your kids from being laughed at, but you can save them from being thrown from they’re board.

The actual wheels can make all the difference, or not….

Wheels, as long as they are made of polyurethane and not plastic, are wheels. Sort of… For beginners, softer wheels make for a smoother transition. (See Powell Peralta’s Bomber Series

There are different degrees of hardness, as well as different sizes. Most shops will set you up with a deck with hard small wheels. These are typical of trick boards, however for cruising they can be a bumpy ride. For beginners, I repeat, soft wheels can help them learn how to ride / cruise faster and safer.

I’m going to refer to Steve Cave’s Choosing a Skateboard series:

Transition / Vert (55-65mm size wheels with a hardness of 95-100a) Larger skateboard wheels roll a lot faster, and when riding ramps this is what you want.

Street / Technical (50-55mm size wheels with a hardness of 97-101a) Skateboarders who like doing flip tricks often like smaller wheels, as they are lighter and closer to the ground, making some skateboarding tricks easier and faster. BUT, these wheels make for a very bumpy ride.

Cruising / Beginner Wheels (64-75mm size wheels with a hardness of 78-85a) Usually cruising wheels are much larger for speed and much softer for riding over rough terrain. You’ll silently cruise over cracks in the sidewalk as well as rough asphalt.

Again, for new riders, you can’t really go wrong with soft wheels. Kids think that skateboarding is all about tricks. Well, first they have to learn how to ride and cruise comfortable, then it is all about tricks… sorta.

Trucks are the key to turning, don’t go cheap.

(but if you do.. try replacing the bushings to improve the turning.)

Trucks will last a long time. I’ve had the same trucks for five or six years.

I’m a HUGE Independent (Highs) fan, they are one of the oldest truck companies still around, besides Gullwing. I like them for they’re street cruising, but I hear from other skaters that Thunder Lights are the way to go. 4.75 is the most common width for trucks, for kids. You’ll want your trucks to be within 1/4" of the size of the deck.

Get familiar with names like Independent, Thunders, Tensor, Krux, Silvers, Grindking, Destructo, Navigator, and Phantom

Who said size doesn’t matters?

A lot of shops will sell parents a super small board for their kids. I hate that. I find smaller boards difficult to teach kids the basics of riding and they out grow them before they out ridden them. I personally recommend starting at 7.5.

Here’s a sizing guide:

Skate Decks, Trucks, Wheels & Parts
DECK WIDTH TRUCK WIDTH WHEEL SIZE
7.25" 4.75 (7.5") 48mm-52mm
7.50" 4.75 (7.5") 48mm-54mm
7.63" 4.75 (7.5") or 5.0 (7.75") 50mm-54mm
7.75" 5.0 (7.75") 52mm-56mm
7.88" 5.0 (7.75") or 5.25 (8.0") 52mm-56mm
8.00" 5.25 (8.0") 52mm-58mm
8.25" 5.25 (8.0") 54mm-60mm
8.5" 169mm Independent (9") 56mm-60mm
9.00" 169mm Independent (9") 56mm-60mm

If you are going to be stingy. Be stingy on the Deck and wheels… for now.

Check out blank boards and wheels at Slamin City on EBAY. You can buy a case of blank decks and wheels for the price you’d pay for one brand name deck. But don’t buy a cheap complete!!!

My Ride

I have several boards. But my regular set up 5 Boro, Independent Highs, Bones Reds and Park Wheels

It’s no secret I am a fan of 5 Boro. I really appreciate what the loca company has done for kids in New York City. I like the 7.65. (But my favorite shape is probably the Deluxe brands; Real, Anti-Hero, and Krooked.) I don’t have expensive ceramic bearings, I have $15 Bones Reds (Black Box). As long as they are clean, they are fine for me. I just got these amazing -sorta hard – sorta soft -wheels, Powel Rippers. Man I love these wheels! It took me awhile to find them.

How to Save the Brooklyn Banks

Fact: They are closing the Brooklyn Banks.

The NYC skateboarding community will likely lose a beloved historical landmark and it will never be the same even if they give it back.

Architectural structures reveal a great deal about their social context, not simply by their intended use, but by the spontaneous and evolving communal activity that is discovered in rivalry, camaraderie, the spirit of play and the human pursuit of something epic.

New York City – the greatest “engineering work of the Continent” unintentionally became one of the most skatable international cities, drawing skateboarders from all over the world, across all social classes and racial demographics, who come to pay tribute to its urban beauty.

image from espn.com

“The contemplated work, when constructed in accordance with my design, will not only be the greatest bridge in existence, but it will be the great engineering work of the Continent and of the age.”

- Report to the New York Bridge Company September 1, 1867 – Plan and Details of Anchorage, Approaches, Towers, and Steel Cables.

It was built. They came. Now they are taking it away…. again.
But there is hope.

The answer lies in the very initiative the drives skateboarding; creative expression. If the space beneath the bridge is destined to be destroyed, than perhaps the skateboarding community needs to stop saying "what a bummer man" and rethink the situation.

The outcome could be so much greater then the reality. Also, if it is possible to keep it open when the space is not being used, then it will give the community a chance to part with it.

To me, the best solution would be to create an unprecedented skate-able tribute, in honor of the esteemed history of the Brooklyn Banks, and then, to let evolution take it’s course.

Briefly, about the Brooklyn Banks

It was through compromise and consideration, that the Brooklyn Banks became a local skate spot, thanks to the dedicated few who turned frustration into action.

There have always been controversies. Skaters, everywhere, through-out history have been pushed out of parks, parking lots, pools, and other spaces. There was very little salvation and only a few places where they were accepted. But they adapted and found forgotten places, took them over guerilla-diy style and made them something far more then they were intended to be. And they’ve lost them.

The Brooklyn Banks is a unique park that truly reflects the spirit of New York City.

When it was built in 1960’s, its purpose was to make use of the dark crime-infested space, between the bridge’s off-ramp and the anchorage. (The anchorage houses the four massive steel cables that suspend the “Great Avenue” across the East River, and connect Manhattan to Brooklyn. ) Skaters were drawn to it’s rolling brick face and seclusion – there was nothing else like it. Now, it a landmark, that attracts more then just skateboarders; bikers, inliners, scooter kids, filmers and photographers.

The banks are not like Burnside or FDR, infamous skater-built and skater-funded parks, with huge concrete transitions and territorial locals. It is a park that became so much more then it intended to be. The very spirit of the Brooklyn Banks’s existence today (thanks to the efforts of leaders in community) has been built out of compromise and perseverance. That is what makes it special.

Interesting fact: In the 1980’s, VCRs came on the scene and the legendary 1985 Powell Peralta release Future-Primitive featured New York City. (Future Primitive: A collection of essays, by John Zerzan, asserting that engineering and technology are carefully constructed means of enslaving people.)

Understanding the conflict

What the DOC?

The Brooklyn Bridge is among the most severely dilapidated bridges in the United States. A very complicated reconstruction and restoration project is about to begin in December. They say until 2014. The New York City Department of Transportation has quietly announced that they will be closing down the Manhattan park known as the Brooklyn Banks and using it as parking lot for the heavy machinery required to restore the bridge.

Of course, human life should take precedence.

However, the skateboarding community did not find out the details of the park’s closure until a Downtown Express reporter overheard it in a planning meeting. Skateboarding advocates have since asked for more information, so that maybe there is a chance to save something…

something can mean everything.

Is asking for a little consideration too much?

In an essence, skateboarding advocates are scrambling, on last minute notice, for an opportunity to know the facts. With the facts, they can help facilitate a compromise that pays due respect to the revered landmark that is being taken from them. Skateboarding advocates are not unrealistic. The safety of the Brooklyn Bridge and human life takes precedence, no matter how significant the park is. However, the local skaters deserve to have a voice, as well as, the thousands who have made the pilgrimage to New York and have paid homage to The Brooklyn Banks. But will the New York City Departments of Transportation and Parks give such a small thing, as a bit of consideration? They should. Because they will have been a part of something epic.

Win / Win

When you think back to the when Philadelphia took hostage of Love Park, you have to wonder if, with compromise, the city and it’s community could have created something greater.

If skateboarders are anything, they are persistent. And over the years, skateboarding has proved that it is an economic force to be reckoned with. There are opportunities here. To do something greater than imagined, but they can’t be pursued without an understanding of what the DOC’s plan is.

A worthy tribute

The bricks that have been laid each hold an incalculable value.
What better way to pay tribute to the importance the Banks and the evolution of New York City skateboarding, then to perhaps design a new public space or art installation, from the very bricks that already exist? Before they are destroyed.

So if this article serves as anything, it should be to call out to those creative thinkers and builders of public art to do something. Even if all it is, is an idea. Do something. Before it is too late.

The future is not set in stone.

Instead of focusing at what will be lost, we need seize the opportunity to preserve and memorialize the symbolic importance of the legendary skate spot. The Brooklyn Banks were not always what it is today. Part of the beauty of evolution is what is constructed out of destruction.

Final thoughts for the haters.

There have been comments on other articles questioning the significance of the Brooklyn Banks, making statements like "They suck.", "They are not that well known" or "Typical elitist east coast thinking." Clearly these comments come from those who can’t hang with the monster truckers that skate here in New York.

  1. A look back at the struggles and triumphs that have gone down in this place is proof enough that the Brooklyn Banks are a legitimate and important icon in New York City skateboarding.
  2. The Brooklyn Banks have been represented in the famous street course built by the Maloof Brothers in Costa Mesa California
  3. Some of the first east coast / New York competitions took place at the Brooklyn Banks. Not soft cushy competitions put on by corporations, but unprecedented, guerilla-syle, street comps.
  4. There is a tech deck representation of the Brooklyn Banks.
  5. Only small minded idiotic wannabe’s who have absolutely nothing to offer can claim that the Brooklyn Banks mean nothing. You can take your small…. err… mindedness and go do something ordinary in the smooth little skate park that "your daddy" built you. So if you truely have nothing to offer, shut the hell up you scum bag, jerk offs..

Halloween Hellraiser 2 – Best Trick Contest

| November 1st | Open Road Rooftop | 350 Grand at Essex.
This coming November 1st will mark the momentous occasion of the 2nd Annual HALLOWEEN HELLRAISER in New York City. The skate jam/best trick contest will all go down at the Lower East Side’s Open Road Rooftop, and this year promises to be better than last…which was pretty damned good. One hundred bucks will go to best costume, while $3 G’s in total await for those putting it down the hardest on a number of obstacles, many of them new and revamped. They’ll be free giveaways, food, drink, music by DJ Smoke L.E.S. and hosting by Billy Rohan & Alex Corporan. Start prepping your costumes now. This one’s gonna be a banger.
