July 22, 2010 – (Santa Monica, CA) – In its 4th year rolling into Manhattan, Red Bull Manny
Mania has expanded to take over an entire weekend with an international flair, bringing in
the best technical pro skateboarders and an entire new crop of upcoming dreamers. All the
previous Manny Mania champions will face off against a heavy list of pros, and for 32 amateurs
from around the world, they could possibly step from obscurity into the skateboard spotlight.
WHO’S WHO AND WHO’S NEXT:
ATHLETES ANNOUNCED FOR RED BULL MANNY MANIA WEEKEND
The previous champions of Red Bull Manny Mania – Ronnie Creager (2007), Joey Brezinski
(2008) and Eli Reed (2009) will all be there to try and prove who is truly the manny king. But
there are plenty of guys waiting to throw in the spoiler – perhaps Brandon Biebel, who has
come in 2nd twice, or those rarely seen at contests, like Tim O’Connor and Stevie Williams. Or
maybe the home field advantage will work for NYC favorites like Billy Rohan or Zered Bassett.
There will be plenty of action before the pros set wheels to the course. On Saturday, August 21st,
amateur skateboarders from around the world will compete in the Red Bull Manny Mania AM
World Final. These 32 competitors, from every continent (except Antarctica), earned their trip to
NYC by beating out their country mates in National qualifiers held all summer long. The winner
of Saturday’s AM event will earn a spot into Sunday’s Pro final – an experience of a lifetime for
this group of skateboarders, many of whom have never set foot in the U.S. and only seen Pros in
videos and magazines.
Both Saturday & Sunday’s events are free and open to the public.

What I really love most about skateboarding, is that I get to do it here, in New York City, where even when it rains… my board is always with me, just in case. The city streets dry fast.
Skateboarding is a time machine:
To relive old favorite things
Be utterly in the moment
To pursue something epically cool…
I appreciate the time it has given me.
Real – time – not just super great fantastic exhilarating time. Time in solitude. Time with friends. Time to get there, to do as much as I can, go as fast as I can, or take the route I want to take. It is human powered transportation, a vehicle of freedom with no restrictions. Except maybe by “the authority”, if they catch me.
No tickets required. Just a skateboard.
You throw it down, pick it up, ride the bus, cut through parks, and hop back on again with (relative) ease. No buckles or straps. No cumbersome mechanical thing that restricts where you can go or how you will get there.
I have faced fears and conquered them.
I have fears. But it’s not over yet. I will get better than this. Despite aches and pains, I am both mentally and physically fitter because of it.
There is no drug or fix to fulfill the rush of it. There is nothing thing like it. It is a reason to wake up, something to think about and analyze and fantasize about. It is a constant creative process and sometimes it is the pursuit of finding nothing in particular. A healthy obsession.
Paul Rodriguez – Tuesday, August 17th @ Rucker Park

It’s Coming! Seven days until Go Skateboarding Day!!!!!!
When: Monday, June 21st, 2010
Where: Everywhere. NYC Event starts at L.E.S. SkatePark at 2PM. Brooklyn crew is meeting up at Homage and skating over the bridge at 12:30. Day ends at KCDC.
Sacramento Kings owner, Joe Maloof personally greeted the kids, talk to them about basketball, signed autographs and handed out tons VANS teeshirts, stickers and plenty of Vitamin Water.
Not only are the Maloof brothers bringing an amazing contest to New York City, but they are donating the park to Flushing Meadows Park in Queens. “The greatest acts of philanthropy are not reactions, but occur in forethought with the inclination to benefit the well-being of humanity.” Read Article
Joe Maloof hangs with the Queens PS160 crew
The 5Boro Flow Crew – Chris Blake, CJ Dixon, and Lorena Lima, along with Uptown’s Jennifer, Joe and David – met the kids at the school and told grand stories of past and future Maloof Money Cups… and handed soooo many stickers!
The kids, the parents, the teachers and the volunteers were STOKED. Turns out a lot of them skateboard.
Billy Rohan (Skate Director, Open Road) , Rodney Torres, Luis Tolentino, Rob Cambell, and Dakota were rockstars! They talked to the kids about skateboarding and played a game of S.K.A.T.E. Luis ollied 9 boards and the kids went crazy. The students at PS180 got a chance to record a little clip that will be featured on Fuel TV so keep an eye out for them when the Maloof Money Cup airs on Fuel TV May 5th & 6th.
Later we all took a tour of the Queens Museum of Art to see the awesome scaled model of New York City that featured little yellow flags representing many of the epic skate spots in the city.
Thank you again for giving us the time – when you are all so busy – to let us have the best class trip – EVER!
Many thanks to Change for Kids who work hard to help under funded schools give kids the opportunity to experience extraordinary – forward thinking -learning experiences, like the Maloof Money Cup NYC Class Trip of 2010.
Wednesday, June 2nd – Come Skate Garden Sk8! – 4pm to 7pm
This is a fun session for the ladies. We want to meet the girls of New Jersey and nearby. Garden Sk8 will soon be host to a GRO Crew and we want you to be involved in the creation! We will skate the park and then all sit down and discuss possibilities for the future. Females of all ages and abilities are encouraged to attend! You don’t skate yet? No problem, there will be equipment on hand for you to use and great girls ready to answer all your questions.
Friday, June 4th – Come Skate The Banks! – 4pm to 7pm
Calling all the ladies of New York! Lets session the Brooklyn Banks Friday before Maloof Money Cup. Good, free, fun for all. Skateboarding, filming skateboarding and a game of s.k.a.t.e. Anyone from a beginning skater to the most talented riders will be able to get involved and have fun. Don’t skate yet, come anyways. Who knows what the day might teach you. Grab you friends, grab your board and hit the bricks.
Saturday June 5th & 6th – Maloof Money Cup
At each Maloof Money Cup event so far, there has been female representation. This one in New York will be the first without the ladies division. We believe the ladies should still have a presence in this great city. GRO will be out at the event for the weekend, interviewing ladies, playing guitars, watching some skateboarding and generally raising awareness of the ladies. This is the largest skate event of its kind the city has ever seen, so come out and be a part of it! Stop by the GRO Booth for more fun and information.
Finally! It’s here, the Grand Opening of Chelsea Pier’s uber sick skate park.
Pier 62 and the Chelsea Cove section of Hudson River Park are nearly complete! This park is full of goodies for all ages – open grassy areas, benches, a skate bowl, a carousel with a green roof and animals, birds and insects from the Hudson Valley corridor, a garden by Lynden Miller and a unique “landscape sculpture” by the artist Meg Webster.
Be sure to stop by this park for the Grand Opening and the upcoming weeks of sunshine!
Try one of our many different boards before you invest the money. PRO-TEC Helmets, Knee, Elbow and Wrist guards are always free to use, upon request. Guaranteed to learn how to push and ride in only one lesson.
May 15th Barriers Go up – During a 4-6 month period beginning in mid-2010, the entire area will be closed due to overhead paint work. DOT expects to re-instate partial access after this work is completed.
“The Banks are still open?! ” “Yeah I was there last weekend.” “No way!”
Speak up for what you believe in.
Thanks to the active support of the community, the DOT has been respectfully leaving the park – as open as safely possible – as they begin the restoration of the Brooklyn Bridge. – But it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen very soon.
The Brooklyn Banks is a unique public space that truly reflects the spirit of New York City.
"Architectural structures reveal a great deal about their social context, not simply by their intended use, but by the spontaneous and evolving communal activity that is discovered in rivalry, camaraderie, the spirit of play and the human pursuit of something epic." – How to Save the Brooklyn Banks
Important Notice from the Department of Transportation
The concrete barriers go up May 15th!
The New York City Department of Transportation is performing rehabilitation and painting of the Brooklyn Bridge. Work commenced in January of 2010 and will continue until 2014. In order to facilitate the
reconstruction and painting work, the contractor will begin to mobilize in the area known as the Red Brick
Park and the Brooklyn Banks, between Pearl Street and Park Row on the north side of the Manhattan
approach of the Brooklyn Bridge.
The contractor installed protective guards around the trees at the end of March, and expects to place a concrete barrier along the perimeter of the shaded section on or around May 15th. Fencing will be installed after the concrete barriers are in place. Setting up this staging area is expected to continue until approximately May 30th. DOT is continuing to work with the communities using this area, to maintain as much access as can be safely accommodated, including the potential relocation of skate areas into areas outside of the staging area. During a 4-6 month period beginning in mid-2010, the entire area will be closed due to overhead paint work. DOT expects to re-instate partial access after this work is completed.
“The contemplated work, when constructed in accordance with my design, will not only be the greatest bridge in existence, but it will be the great engineering work of the Continent and of the age.”

When everybody’s doing it, nobody feels out of place. Thanks to Pro-Tec, we had more then enough equipment to make sure everybody was safe and injury free. Thanks again Pro-Tec!

The 2010 Maloof Money Cup is just around the corner with the first stop in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, NY June 5th and 6th. Not only is this the first time MMC has been to the “Big Apple” but this will also be the first time we build a permanent skate park! Construction of the 16,000-square-foot skate park (being constructed on top of the former Astral Fountain) is underway, signaling that the countdown to the first-ever MMC – NYC has begun. This one-of-a-kind skate park will be donated to the City of New York through the NYC Parks and Recreation Department’s “Adopt-A-Park” program. Pro skaters Chris Cole and Geoff Rowley, NY Skate Legend Steve Rodriguez and Joe Ciaglia, president of California Skateparks, led the design of the world-class street course.
Tokidoki and Sephora invite the ladies to come skate at the NYC product launch of their collaborative new make up line.
Tina Parol was just killing the mic with "Who’s Got Your Money" while Lorena and Desiree casually played in a custom built pink and black mini-ramp. The crowd of excited fashion and beauty bloggers circled around snapping pictures and waving to the skaters, while the upper echelon of Sephora (a seemingly she-she-chic brand) were proudly standing back telling themselves, “Wow, this was a really cool idea.”
Why don’t girls have more girl-inspired product sponsors?
At the time, I was too busy gushing over Simone Legno to think about what girls in skateboarding could learn from this event… that and the dude with the donuts on a light-saber kept lurking by the mini-ramp.Simone is a branding and illustrative genius who had been a huge inspiration for me for as long as I can remember being a graphic designer. When he hooked up Pooneh Mohajer and Ivan Arnold, Tokidoki was born and they began producing their "criminally cute" line of purses, t-shirts, and figurines… makeup and eventually skateboards.
"Hey!? Is anybody sponsored by Tokidoki?"
When it comes to raising the money we need – to pursue our epic dreams – maybe we should focus on what makes us different from the boys.
Instead of expecting the same treatment or fighting for equal contest purses -we have to accept it. Girls and guys will never be "equal" – until we have to do it ourselves. Because the problem with girls’ skateboarding, is not that we are skateboarding.. it’s that we are trying to make our mark on the world via the same path the boys before us have laid. It is very much like that in all sports. Except Women’s billiards, they did it all on their own.
Understanding (briefly) the power of the "Girl Brand"
In many ways we will always be "The Side Project", but being on the side is not – out of the picture. We have as much – if not more – ability to create smarter sponsorships for ourselves that are not 100% dependent on the success of our male counterparts. We just have to think like girls. Do you have any idea what the buying power of a 12 to 17 year old girl?
In 2002, there was 4,810,000 female skateboarders.
As a group, Teens of
all ages spent a projected $112.5 billion dollars in 2003.
Teenagers influence over $600 billion worth of spending
Teenage girls spend over $9 billion on makeup and skin products alone
How many brands out there market to teenage girls? makeup & beauty products, clothing, accessories, music, health drinks are a only a handful. Those are the brands (across all sponsored athletics) that girls need to start seeking out.
Girl Organizations
There’s a longer list now then ever before. Local, national and international organizations who inspire, support and unite girls who skateboard (and other sports too.)
“This event was put on with a lot of effort from Billy Rohan, Open Road NYC and a slew of supportive sponsors. It wasn’t about big pros trying to win thousands of dollars; it was much more about bringing kids from all the skate scenes in the area together for one big mashup.” By: Allen Ying
Maloof Tickets may be free, but you’ll have to work to get them.
These kids know how sick the NYC Maloof Money Cup, June 5 & 6th is going to be because they camped out – in the rain – just to get their hands on a golden ticket.
– You’re looking at the first kid online for the premiere of “This Time Tomorrow.” He was standing there since 10PM the night before. Click the pic to check out the line that wrapped around the block.
Tickets are limited and there are more events coming – we’ll keep you posted!
MMC presents the NYC free premier of This Time Tomorrow skate film: First 50 in attendance get free tickets to MMC-NYC. Premier will be a first-come-first-served limited showing at 12:30pm April 17th inside Anthology Film Archives 32 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003
Nearly 4 years in the making, ?This Time Tomorrow? is a film themed around the transition from day to night. It features the talent of Devon Connell, Jimmy McDonald, Curtis Rapp, Dave Caddo, Brendan Granstrand and Will Harmon. Almost 9 months were spent abroad, filming in such locales as London, Paris, Lyon, Rome, Berlin, Athens, Venice, Trieste and Montreal. Even so, the majority of the film was shot right here in Philadelphia, a city absent in many of today?s video projects and long forgotten by the industry. The United Kingdom?s Rory Milanes, Steph Morgan and Lucien Clarke make up nearly half the film and create a strong British presence. Each of their sections were shot in the streets of London, where short days and long nights make the camera light a must. Time was also spent in various other locations along the eastern seaboard including Boston, N.Y.C, Washington D.C. and Miami. Guest appearances in the film include Steve Durante, Brian Douglas, Shaun Williams, John Kroesser, Pat Heid, Jimmy Carr, Daniel Kim, Ricky Geiger, Pat Stiener, Rich Adler and many more. The creators of ?Few & Far Between? bring you this new independent film arriving in April of 2010
So you are visiting New York City or maybe you have family coming into the city and you are looking for something different to do, a fun and exciting activity to try. Real NYC adventure tours are hard to come by, you know.. for people like us. Not exactly a rock climbing, white water rafting, kinda town. Most tours involve sitting a bus and riding from site to site with a charismatic guy chirping facts and fellow tourists snapping pictures. That’s not exactly the way we roll.
Don’t get frustrated wandering around the city looking for that sick skate spot. Don’t worry about having to trek out with your kids and sit around and wait for them to get done skating. Relax. We’ve got your covered. Take a skateboarding tour with us.
Who can participate?
Everybody. Parents and participants who are not comfortable skateboarding, can rent a bike, bring their skates, or we can arrange a walk-able tour.
First timers obsessed with learning how to skateboard.
Former skaters itching for a comeback tour
Core skateboarding fanatics who want the chance to skate some of New York City’s sickest spots
Vert skaters looking to check out the many city skate parks
Longboarders looking to cruise on a through Central Park to Midtown, or a romantic granite and marble sunset on the Hudson in Battery Park.
Spring has sprung and Open Road of New York is hosting the King Of Spring Skateboard Showdown at Thomas Jefferson Park in NYC on Saturday, April 17th. Billy Rohan, Alex Corporan, and Chad Muska will be there keeping things hyped.
(From: www.lat34.com) "The Maloofs understand the awesomeness of NYC because they are putting their Maloof Money Cup in NYC. Rumors are running rampant as to what will show up on the exclusive skate course but info is slowly leaking. If you want to get more scoop on what’s going on, check out Fuel’s The Daily Habit tomorrow night at 6:00PM because along with Geoff Rowley, Joe Ciaglia, Steve Rodriguez, and musical guest Dan Black, Joe Maloof will be making an appearance on the Habit. Not often does the show get a billionaire to come on. Should be pretty neat. Today’s New York Week episode is all about the upcoming Maloof Money Cup in NYC, and founder Joe Maloof is here to tell us about the exciting new developments. Also, course designer Joe Ciaglia and revered skater, Geoff Rowley unveils the blueprints for the Maloof Cup course. And, 5 Boro Skateboards Co-Owner, Steve Rodriguez drops in tell us what’s up in the 5 Boros this year. Plus, the pop artist, Dan Black, is bringing a live performance to our NYC Stride Sound Stage."
